Scalloped Edge Bowls
Rudy Lopez taught both a Saturday session after the local Northwest Michigan Woodturning Association meeting and a Sunday session for advanced turners. During that Sunday session we learned how to make scalloped edge bowls with a lovely pedestal foot.
In typical Jo fashion, I decided to go thin while turning to test my skills. Ending less than 1/8' thick it is a beautiful piece of maple that I will cherish learning increased tool control.
Live Edged Bowls with Pat Carroll
During Pat Carrolls visit from Ireland (since relocated to the US) in 2025 he came by the Northwest Michigan Woodturning Association. Over the weekend in Traverse City he taught a live edged class with some of the turners locally.
I turned bowl #130 during the class and fell in love with leaving bits of moss on the rim. The fanciful side of my brain looks forward to turning more live edged bowls in the future!
A Taste Of Woodturning with Mitch Jones
In September 2025, I recieved a scholarship to pursue a class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. While taking this week long immersive course I found leaps and bounds refinement of technique on the lathe. Slowing down to breathe and be intentional.
While at Arrowmont I turned Bowls #143 & #144, both to 1/8" thickness consistent. We also turned rolling pins, a handle for kitchen implements, candle sticks (obviously I put rings on mine) as well as an Orb. The Orb was a process that took the better half of a week to turn, layout, woodburn and then paint to reach the finished design.
Mitch approached me about purchasing bowl #144 while it was still on the lathe. Little did he know I had planned to have my fellow classmates sign it as a gift to commemerate his first National Series Class at Arrowmont.
